Lent me your ear

The Lenten season is here.

What, if anything, do you plan to give up for Lent?

I can't make up my mind; either donuts or visiting Lip Schtick. ;)

Smoking, dessert, and adding mentoring.

Okiedoke - Wow! Donots or Lip Schtick? Either one would be a HUGE sacrifice. Ha!

Morning Glory - Come on! Remeber in college when you gave up up lipstick for Lent?! The ultimate sacrifice!

Justin - Very cool to do the mentoring thing. I'm not very good with kids, but admire those who reach out. Major snaps for you on giving up smoking. You may have to keep the desserts as a trade off.

I don't usually do the Lent thing but once in awhile I get high-minded enough to IMAGINE giving something up. Like Coke (the cola) which I'm addicted to or my penchant for constant emailing.

The thought usually dissipates as soon as it forms.

I'm a hedonist and I'm giving up absolutely nothing.

I thought really hard about giving up sugar. Does that count?

Believe it or not--the martini project is giving up something for Lent... though, we're not strong enough to give up vodka... but... I am saying goodbye to ice cream, cookies and cake... 40 days... I can do that standing on my head.

Nicole - Ha! Just as long as you don't give up blogging, I'm OK. I need my daily dose of nicoleMART.

TII - Good for you! I'm all for the good livin'!

Jessi - Like they say ... it's the thought that counts!

Todd - Not to be Debbie Downer, but good luck! I'm not sure I could give all that up.

Laurie - Hey gal! I'm not Catholic either, but figured I'd still participate. I gave up bread and IT'S KILLING ME!

Anonymous - I wish I would have thought of your idea.

Well heck. I probably should give up cussing. Yep. I admit it, sometimes I'm a potty mouth. Not so much when I write, but every now and then a big one pops out and I need to stop. But that's really a bad habit, not a sacrifice. (I'm not Catholic either, but we Methodists do occasionally give up things for Lent) I'll give up chips, another bad habit, but definitely a sacrifice to quit. So no chips. Dang, I want one already...

My wife and I both gave up sweets and I gave up cursing. That includes ice cream, candy of all kinds, desserts, you name it. Things like juice don't count. I've also taken up saying the rosary again, meditating on the sorrowful, joyful, luminous mysteries, etc. Also, FYI, many Protestant denominations have taken up an increased observance of Lent in recent years -- even Ash Wednesday. If you're curious, check out Beliefnet's "The Way of the Cross" for an online multimedia treatment of the stations of the Cross...
