Where in the HELL are the Olympics taking place?

Is it Torino or Turin?

Please help.

Both :)
Torino is the Italian name for the city of Turin.

Wow, I didn't even know there was a correlation. Oh, the things I learn reading this blog!

We English speakers said "Turin" for maybe a thousand years or so, much like people in Spanish-speaking countries might say "Estados Unidos," "Nueva York" or "Los Angeles." Then, apparently right after the 2002 games in Salt Lake City (Ciudad del Lago de Sal), the snooty appeal of saying "Torino" reached NBC, so they started saying it too.
It's a little like the Jimmy Smits sketch on SNL a bunch of years ago when all the anglo characters overstress their Spanish pronunciations, only that was made-up silly and this is actual silly.
After all, no one's talking about the 1972 Munchen or the 2004 Athena Games, are they?
