Pet peeves - #6 continued

While we're on the subject of mispronounced words ...

It's jaguar.

NOT jagwire.

And for that matter ...

There is only one r is sherbet.

Therefore, if I hear one more person pronounce it sherbert, I may have to kick said person's ass.

I spent four years in college in Chicago and I tried to dampen my accent to dry up some of the "eedjut hillbilly" jokes. I never lost "Howdy," and I never lost the inability to say the letters "ire" as anything other than "ahr," as in "wahr" for "wire," "fahr" for "fire." Although I have to admit, the phrase should probably always be "tahr tool."

So I have no problems with Jagwahr. It's them dadgum Merc'ry's and Chevalays I can't pronounce right.

Brett - Ha ha ha! My grandpa (who I miss dearly, and who hailed from Arkansas) called it Chevalay as well!

Dear sweet Lord in heaven......

I thought I was the only living mammal left that knew how to pronounce sherbet (not sherbert). I've given up correcting people on it because it seemed such a lost cause.

Thank you for renewing my faith in humanity.

I'm with you, LilRed, but I was horrified (ok, maybe that's too strong) to see that Merriam-Webster lists the sher-bert pronunciation as a variant. Online, you can even hear one of those M-W perfect speakers say it that way. Frightening.

That's fine. As long as you say all three syllables, like that near-orgasmic british woman in the commercials... Say it with me: Jag-u-ah.

The Grish - Ah yes. We are kindred spirits in the world of pronunciation. Say no to sher-bert!

Jay - Horrified is NOT too strong! Why do we allow people to f*ck up words like this? And putting it in the dictionary just gives them the OK to do so! Arrrgggggh!

durante vita - I will gladly utilize the triple syllable version. Anything is better than the Okie jagwire pronunciation.
